Como’s Browse Donation Program (and how you can help)!

Como Zoo is now accepting fresh browse donations to support the health and enrichment of our animals. Here’s how you can help:

What is “Browse”?

Browse is a term used for edible woody plants. The leaves, bark, berries, and flowers can all be helpful to the animals’ digestion and provide important enrichment opportunities. By donating browse, you are giving our animals a healthy and stimulating addition to their daily routine.

Approved Species We Accept

  • Ash
  • Basswood
  • Box Elder
  • Elm
  • Grapevine
  • Hackberry
  • Mulberry
  • Willow

What We Cannot Accept

  • Any material treated with pesticides, herbicides, or chemical sprays.
  • Toxic or unknown plant species.
  • Large tree trunks, hollow logs, or oversized branches that cannot be safely handled.
  • Wilted or dried material during the growing season (leafless is fine in winter).

How to Donate

  1. Contact us first: Email jill.erzar@stpaul.gov or call 651-487-8208 to confirm species and arrange drop-off.
  2. Prepare your browse: Trim clean branches, bundle by species, and avoid dirt, fungal growth, or broken ends.
  3. Drop off or schedule pickup: Bring to our Browse Donation Drop Zone (see map) or arrange pickup if you have a large volume nearby.
  4. Processing: Our staff will clean, inspect, and distribute the browse to appropriate animals.

Drop-Off Location

The Browse Donation Drop Zone is located in the eastern corner of the Wolf Parking Lot, near Como Town (see map). Look for signs and barrels marked for donations.

Why Donations Matter

  • Enrichment: Promotes natural foraging and chewing behaviors.
  • Nutrition: Provides variety and healthy nutrients.
  • Cost Savings: Reduces feed costs and supports sustainability.
  • Community Engagement: Connects you directly to animal care at Como Zoo.

Questions? Email jill.erzar@ci.stpaul.mn.us

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I donate a species not listed?

If you have another tree or shrub, send us a photo or description. We’ll verify if it’s safe.

Does the browse need to have leaves?

Yes, during the growing season. In winter, leafless branches are acceptable.

Can you pick up from my home?

Possibly, depending on location and volume. Contact us to discuss.

Will I see my donation used right away?

Not immediately—our team inspects and processes all browse before it reaches animals. But rest assured, your donation will soon enrich their lives!
