We have some sad news to pass along. This morning, August 5th, Denali, the male eastern timber wolf, was euthanized due to failing health and
Denali was 16 years old. Life expectancy in the wild is 4 to 8 years.
Como currently has a female wolf, Shy-Anne, also 16.
Both Denali and Shy-Anne were born on April 5, 2003. They have the same father, but different mothers. They are the first wolves born in Minnesota through artificial insemination.
Our deepest condolences to the zookeepers and all who loved Denali.
We drive by all the time and the last two weeks we have not seen Shy-Ann. We know you guys did a lot to help her hips and we know her age but for Shy-Ann fans we want to know if we can have updated info.
Thank you for being the unsung hero’s at this time as well!
Unfortunately Shy Anne passed away earlier this year.
I notice that the wolf “woods” has been completely cleaned of underbrush. What is next for that space? Will there be more wolves?
We do plan to add new wolves to the exhibit in the future.
Are there simply no wolves at the zoo now??
Unfortunately Shy Anne did pass away about a year ago. We hope to have wolves back again at the zoo sometime in the future.
We saw 2 wolves running around Wolf Woods this morning, so it appears they are back! Hoping that the walkway will be opened to the public again at some point.
More information will be coming soon!
Can you tell us a little bit about the history of the two new wolves at Como?
